THE DEFINITION

What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A customer-facing senior engineer who takes your problem from first conversation to code running in production. No PM translating. No team to hand off to.

Coined at Palantir, 2020.

  • Deployed to your problem, not your ticket queue.
  • Talks to your users, reads your data, writes the code.
  • Owns what ships — including the 3am part.

The math

One Engineer Instead of Six Roles

PM, analyst, project manager, designer, engineer, DevOps — one FDE absorbs all six.

Product Manager

Separate hire✓ Absorbed
Writes the spec they build themselves.

Business Analyst

Separate hire✓ Absorbed
The owner's sentence goes straight into code.

Project Manager

Separate hire✓ Absorbed
The person planning the work is doing it.

Designer

Separate hire✓ Absorbed
Flows prototyped on real users, same loop.

Fullstack Engineer

Backend, frontend, data — reviewed line by line.

DevOps

Pipelines, infra, on-call.

Task time = work + waiting — and waiting is the bigger part. AI compresses the work. Removing handoffs deletes the waiting. That's why one FDE outruns a team that was merely handed AI tools.

THE OBVIOUS QUESTION

AI Writes the Code. So Why Pay for an Engineer?

Writing code was never the hard part. Owning it in production is.

Who writes the code
A vibe coder

AI, mostly.

A forward deployed engineer

AI, mostly. Same tools.

Who reads it
A vibe coder

Nobody.

A forward deployed engineer

Someone with 11 years, before merge.

When it's wrong
A vibe coder

You hear it from a user.

A forward deployed engineer

Evals and guardrails catch it first.

In production
A vibe coder

Works in the demo.

A forward deployed engineer

Runs under load, monitored, with a rollback.

Who answers for it
A vibe coder

The prompt.

A forward deployed engineer

A named person, on a call.

Speed after week two
A vibe coder

Drops — nobody understands the code.

A forward deployed engineer

Holds — someone understands the whole thing.

Same AI. Different amount of adult supervision.

Somewhere in your backlog there is a problem four people have been circling for a quarter.

In practice

What Two or Three People Have Actually Delivered

Most of our FDEs were founders or product owners before. That's what lets one person carry a product.

Before

  1. Owner asks.
  2. Analyst writes the spec.
  3. Team estimates.
  4. Work starts three weeks later.
  5. Ships in six.
  6. Owner says: close, but not what I meant.

After

  1. Owner asks.
  2. The engineer who heard the sentence writes the code.
  3. Ships in two weeks.
  4. Owner corrects it the same week.

What changed: three handoffs, three queues. Tempo on a live client: 2–3 tasks a month → 2–3 a week.

“Plenty of the people talking about FDEs are fake gurus. We interview and test 15–18 engineers to be sure about one — that's who joins your project.”
Stas Gorshenin, Head of Sales & Marketing, Valletta Software

HOW IT WORKS

How You Get a Forward Deployed Engineer

  1. A 30-Minute Call

You describe the business problem. If an FDE is the wrong fit, we say so.

  2. We Shortlist From the Bench

15–18 engineers interviewed and tested per hire. You make the final call.

  3. They Start Inside Your Team

Your tools, your standups, production access. First release within two weeks.

What we need from you
  • A closed product with its own perimeter
  • A product owner who can say 'I want this'
  • Production access from day one

When this doesn't work: if features wait on five sign-offs by policy, the queue isn't in engineering — one engineer won't fix that.

FAQs

A senior engineer embedded in your business who takes a problem from first conversation to production: own discovery, own spec, own deploy, responsible after launch. Unlike a contractor: no PM translating, no team to hand off to.

They sit in your standups, read your data, and talk to your users, then build. A typical week means scoping one business problem, shipping it, watching how it behaves in production, and fixing what it does wrong. AI agents write most of the code volume. The engineer decides what to build, reviews every line before merge, and puts evals and guardrails around anything customers touch.

Palantir. They put the name on the role around 2020, describing engineers who deploy to the customer's site rather than working from headquarters. The term spread once AI could carry the volume of the work, leaving one role to remove the waiting between roles. US job boards now list thousands of openings using the title.

Staff augmentation gives you hands for a defined ticket queue. You still supply the product manager, the project manager and the DevOps. A forward deployed engineer replaces all four. You hand over a business problem instead of a backlog. Fewer people in the loop, fewer meetings, and one name that owns the outcome.

Judgment and accountability. AI agents produce code volume fast, and produce plausible-looking wrong answers just as fast. Our engineers average 11 years of experience and most have been a CTO or a founder, so they know what production looks like when it breaks. They review the output, wrap it in evals and guardrails, and carry the pager. That part is not included in vibe coding.

We interview and test 15–18 engineers for each placement to be sure about one, and you meet the shortlist and make the final call. The first conversation happens within a day or two. Most engagements are running inside two weeks and ship a first release in the first sprint.

You are comparing it against four salaries, not one. We quote a monthly rate per engineer: no recruiter fee, no bench cost, no notice period. We give you a number on the first call once we know the shape of the work. We don't publish a rate card because scope moves it too much.

Yes, within the boundary of one product. A forward deployed engineer replaces the route a task takes: owner speaks, engineer ships. That only works if the old route is switched off inside that perimeter. The rest of your organisation is not touched. Without that change an FDE becomes a regular developer, only more expensive, so we say this upfront.

Then the bottleneck is not engineering, and one engineer will not fix it. If your feature waits on five departmental approvals by policy, it will wait in the same queues no matter who builds it. We check this on the first call. If that is your situation, we say we cannot help rather than sell you an FDE.

You tell us and we replace them from the same bench, at no cost. NDA and IP transfer are in place from day one. And if we think your problem doesn't need a forward deployed engineer, we tell you that on the first call instead of selling you one.

Ready to put an engineer inside your problem?

One call. You describe what's stuck. If an FDE isn't the fix, we say so.
